Davis credits her fifth grade instructor Olive Bopp with guiding her into writing.

Merlene Davis graduated from the College of Kentucky with a Journalism degree. She went to the College of California, Berkeley, via the Maynard Institute and worked as a journalist in Memphis Tennessee just before returning to the Lexington Herald-Chief. She was a columnist at the Lexington Herald-Chief from 1985 till her retirement in 2015. She is an inductee into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame.
