22 Mar Capitalism and Socialism: Crash Course World History #33

Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! Visit http://store.dftba.com/products/crashcourse-world-history-the-complete-series-dvd-set to buy a set for your home or classroom.

In which John Green teaches you about capitalism and socialism in a way that is sure to please commenters from both sides of the debate. Learn how capitalism arose from the industrial revolution, and then gave rise to socialism. Learn about how we got from the British East India Company to iPhones and consumer culture in just a couple of hundred years. Stops along the way include the rise of industrial capitalism, mass production, disgruntled workers, Karl Marx, and the Socialist Beard. The socialist reactions to the ills of capitalism are covered as well, and John discusses some of the ideas of Karl Marx, and how they’ve been implemented or ignored in various socialist states. Plus, there are robots!

This has nothing to do with the knowledge this man is giving to us, but he looks like he’s related to Daniel Tosh

As far as I'm alive anything that the government touch in business is a failure or corruption. Take the Wright's brother and Langley as one example.

Doesn’t the constant emphasis on child labor in capitalism in the industrial revolution insinuate that it was a product of capitalism, when in fact it existed long before? Further, there is a neglect to mention that many of our positive work conditions (such as the two day weekend) were introduced as a capitalist ploy to increase worker efficiency

capitalism and socialism both are systems designed to collapse in cycles and we are coming to the next cycle soon. Capitalism is designed failure because the more you produce cheap the more you decrease jobs, decrease income decrease purchasing. OIl can be in demand where the entire globe NEEDS it but if nobody can afford to buy it is there really a demand? We are headed into the war phase of this coming depression where it's the battle between the wealthy and the slaves aka workers are the killers, we are willing to kill each other just to make wealthy people richer and create our own slavery. There are no big bad guys, just stupid society who keep giving evil power while claiming to be righteous. Capitalism hasn't won else there wouldn't be a debate about it.

This misses the core criticism of capitalism, that all of the investment and automation you talk about is only available to those who already have a fair amount of wealth, which allows them to generate more wealth and power, which allows them to erect barriers to entry and gain more wealth and power, and the gap between the rich and poor, the powerful and powerless, gets worse and worse until you have to send your child to work in a dangerous factory just to have enough money to eat, a situation that didn't exist before the industrial revolution, and is glossed over in this video as if it was just this mysterious thing that popped up inescapably for no reason. The biggest question to answer about the industrial revolution is how can an enormous improvement in productivity lead to regular people having a worse standard of living.

Doesn’t it seem that the two, Capitalism and Socialism, work together hand in hand? Capitalism moves us forward, while Socialism prevents us from sliding back. These two ideas work in concert.

How can you talk about capitalism without talking about slavery and the British sugar islands?? The availability of manufactured goods in Britain relied on the exploitation of enslaved Africans. It's a hugely important part of the story of the development of industrial capitalism.

Capitalism is unstable and leads to higher and higher inequalities without regulation. It needs fair regulations so that people are paid hat they are worth and not what they are desperate enough to pay. For that there needs to be fair regulations.

Socialism doesn’t work, it has never made anyone richer in the history of socialism except for its own party leaders. It’s theft of your rights, your money, and your property in exchange for more government power which in and of itself is a bad thing. Any politician in the free world pushing for this failed human experiment is a traitor to his or her own people.
