07 Dec E-Learning and Social Networking Handbook: Resources for Higher Education eBook

It is easier to engage today’s students with dynamic digital learning sources such as social media, as compared to traditionally static print media. Many educators face the challenge of how to incorporate the same in the current system of education. E-learning has come forward as the medium for engaging today’s students and the same can be done by making use of the e-Learning and Social Networking Handbook: Resources for Higher Education eBook.

This eBook aims to bridge the gap between social networking and traditional teaching. It highlights interesting and challenging aspects of e-learning and explains how to use social networking tools for course design. For understanding the same, a significant amount of researched background information is also provided, in order to demonstrate the use of social networking as a technique for providing education.

Educational content can be delivered in various formats, such as text, audio and video. Each medium has its own strengths and weaknesses, which have been explained in the eBook. In the current technology-driven world, methods such as wikis, pod casting and web casting are being commonly used to transfer education. Implementation, evaluation, induction and training are explained through descriptive case studies, which give a practical approach to learning.

Apart from the above, contact addresses, websites and additional reading resources have been provided to enhance the design of courses. This eBook, a practical guide, assists trainers in delivering modern online course modules and helps educators prepare the best courses for distributed learning.

One of the authors of this eBook, Robin Mason, is a Professor of Educational Technology at the Open University in Georgia, USA. She specializes in the designing and making practical use of online teaching and learning. Through her years of experience in this field, she has come to understand the challenges faced and attempts to explain the same through this eBook.

The other author of e-Learning and Social Networking Handbook: Resources for Higher Education eBook, Frank Rennie is also a Professor, but teaches Rural Development at the UHI Millennium Institute in the islands of Scotland.

Though there are several advantages of social networking being used for learning, there are certain disadvantages as well. For example, one such disadvantage is that it cannot replace face-to-face interaction that would be required for a learning module such as body language. Other limitations have been explained in the chapter titled ‘Constraints in Course Design.’

The comprehensive e-Learning and Social Networking Handbook: Resources for Higher Education eBook does well to explain the changing psyche of today’s learner, which needs to be kept in mind while designing a module. This learner is more familiar with social networking tools as compared to previous generations and also grasps concepts faster through this mode. Unless the mentality of behavior pattern of the targeted audience can be understood, this eBook can never become a complete success. This is the overall summary of this eBook, which has the potential to change learning in the present and future.
