14 Apr Paramedic Science and Paramedic Courses – How To Apply Successfully
Paramedic Science is a degree course available at several UK universities. Other universities run equivalent Paramedic Practise degree courses that also lead to qualification and registration as a paramedic. To apply for enrolment onto a Paramedic Science Degree course you need to apply through UCAS and this can be done online.
To qualify to apply for Paramedic Science or any other Paramedic degree course the usual basic requirements are 5 GCSEs including English and Maths at grade C or above and 2 A levels or the equivalent, again at grade C or above. Both your GCSE’s and A levels will preferably include a science subject but not necessarily biology.
For Paramedic courses, other qualifications are often considered if they demonstrate an equivalent level of academic ability and scientific aptitude. This is particularly true in the case of mature students. Btecs and Open University credits are typical examples.
Competition for Paramedic Courses is fierce and relevant experience is essential to secure a place. Examples of relevant experience would include any work, paid or voluntary, that involves working with the public with a preferential view being taken of healthcare related work. Such pre-paramedic experience might include working at a care home, volunteering with the Red Cross, assisting at a local cardiac rehabilitation group, or diabetic information and education sessions, volunteering at your local hospice or even working as a lifeguard at a local pool.
Search the notice board & leaflet rack of your doctor’s surgery for information on any patient information or support groups that might run in your area and try to get involved. You may also get work experience at a G.P. surgery or a work shadow placement at your local hospital. Admission directors of Paramedic courses are looking for students who demonstrate commitment so a day here and there is not enough. They understand that hospital and GP placements will be short but they also want to see longer term work experience over 3 months or more.
