Mike is studying philosophy in one of the top 10 universities in the world. Usually people go to university just because they want to have a job, but Mike’s case is completely different. He has a purpose of going to university.
Mike knew that he wants to study not because of the money. Mike wanted to study something that he can do as a hobby. If you can perceive your job as a hobby, you can be much more successful at it. If you pursue money itself, you can get burned out very fast. If you do something that you really like, money will come eventually.
99% of schools are really bad and there are 1% of schools that are really worth going and after graduating from them, you can find a really good job. Good examples of really good schools are Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford. You can find a fantastic job and make some really good money, but you can do that if you have your own business as well. You can earn this money with less effort because the competition is not that big.
If you go to one of the best universities in the world and you are better than the other students in those universities and you are willing to work for someone 70 hours a week, then you can have a really good financial success. However, you are going to give away your freedom by working for someone else.
It is possible to succeed by studying in university something that you are not interested in and doing it only for the sake of money, but that means that you are going to sell your freedom.
This is a lifestyle choice that Mike is not willing to take. He does not want to be afraid that his boss can fire him anytime.
If you are not able to go the best universities, do not think of university unless it is your hobby. If you think of money, only the best universities are worth it. If you think of hobby, it is a personal lifestyle choice.
