When Erik Meyer established out to make a refreshing university music for his alma mater, he hoped to unite Johns Hopkins College generations past and existing with a timeless composition.

So, he looked to “The Johns Hopkins Ode” and assumed, how can I enliven this?

He tinkered with the initial lyrics, trimming them down and including syllables, to craft a memorable music rooted in Hopkins’ custom. A collegiate, simple-to-sing adaption of The Ode emerged.

“It’s important that we connect ourselves with folks of the past,” suggests Meyer, a 2004 Peabody graduate. “We are portion of a custom.”

Meyer’s “Truth of the matter Guideline Our University—The Spirit of JHU” was just lately named winner of the JHU Music Contest, having been given the most votes of the 5 finalists picked out by a variety committee. “The Hopkins Black and Blue,” composed by Peabody undergraduate Tariq Al-Sabir, was a near next, organizers said.
