25 Dec University of Guam Cancer Research Center – Researching the Effects of the Areca (Betel) Nut
The Pacific Islander population has a significant burden of cancer yet is highly under-researched and underserved in this area. The Cancer Research Center at the University of Guam, the only American cancer research center west of Hawaii, is working to advance knowledge of cancer health disparities among Pacific Islanders. This has been possible in conjunction with the University of Hawaii through a grant from the National Cancer Institute.
The center is conducting research on several of the prominent types of cancer in the region, one of which is oral cancer. The center has found that oral cancer incidences across the Pacific Islands seem to correlate largely with the usage of areca nut, also known as betel nut, and has become the first center to research areca nut as a carcinogen.
